Almost all dogs can swim, the question is not how to teach a dog to swim, but how to make her love swimming. But there are exceptions: some dogs do not like swimming, because it is difficult for them to give this process due to structural features or physiology.
Swimming is an instinctive act, and once in the water, any dog makes an attempt to swim. But you need to know that short-legged dogs, dogs with a shortened muzzle, a too heavy chest and a light rear part can either swim or can stay on water for a very short time.

Such breeds include scotch terriers, welsh corgi pembroke, bulldogs, basset hounds, dachshunds, pugs. Greyhounds and small breeds with abundant wool swim poorly - Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso. Nowadays, among the products of the zoo industry there are also special vests for dogs that cannot swim.
You need to teach a dog to water even in puppyhood. But not earlier than 3 months - only after all vaccinations are made and when the seasonal opportunity presents itself to get into the reservoir. The owner's task is to make the dog enjoy bathing.
If the dog swam, then this does not mean that she likes the process. This also does not mean that she can swim as long as she wants. Also, if your breed is admittedly “waterfowl” - a Labrador, Golden Retriever, Spaniel, this does not mean that the dog loves water from birth. Like people, the preferences in dogs are very individual and often do not depend on belonging to a particular breed.
The first water exercises should not scare the dog. You should always remember that you need to take care not about how to teach your dog to swim, but about how to make her love this activity. Here you need to stock up on patience, treats and dog's favorite toys. Swimming training is always built on the game. Any violent or brutal action can permanently avert a dog from swimming.
